The Professional Standards for BC Educators outlines the responsibilities and expectations of teachers to students ranging from Kindergarten to grade 12. These standards for teachers are ultimately for the benefit of the students, as teachers must strive to be trustworthy adults as they provide knowledge and educational opportunities to all students. There are nine standards that teachers must be diligent in accomplishing. Instead of standards that regard direct actions and rules, this document addresses how teachers are to act within and beyond the classroom, for example, by respecting the profession’s reputation, committing to truth and reconciliation in their practice, reaching diverse students through various teaching methods, having a broad understanding and knowledge of teaching material, communicating with families, and being mindful of their own learning and development as teachers.
